Location of Odesa region's policemen's assassins determined

The police have determined the location of the criminals who killed two police officers in the Odesa region on Friday, a source in the law enforcement agencies told Interfax on Saturday. At the same time, the Interior Ministry's Main Department in the Odesa region has not confirmed this information.
According to the source, the criminals have barricaded themselves in a hotel in the Prymorsky district in Odesa. There is information that the police have encircled the building and are exchanging fire with the criminals.

Monument to Isaac Babel unveiled in Odessa

Monument to great writer Isaac Babel was unveiled in Odessa on September 4.
Now this great native of Odessa, author of famous "Konarmiya" in bronze can be seen on the corner of two Odessa streets -Zhukovsky and Richelievskaya where the monument is erected.
The memorial composition consists of a bronze sculpture of the author of famous Odessa stories and collections of short stories "Konarmiya" who sits on the stairs with a notebook in his hands. Lukoil to restart Odessa refinery in 2012

The executive leadership of the Odessa refinery hopes to renew work at the facility in 2012, Interfax-Ukraine learned from Lukoil-Odessa Refinery General Director Valeriy Chakheyeva.
"We have hope. We need to keep equipment battle-ready; that is to say, after making a decision on the route on delivering crude, we need to begin working immediately", Chakheyev said.
Chakheyev said that the most optimal route for crude deliveries was the Lisichansk-Kremenchuk-Odessa.

Odessa Railway prepares the next generation

Odessa Railway has recently provided 238 students from the State Academy of Railway Transport, Dnipropetrovs'k National University of Railway Transport and Odessa College of Railway Transport with practical and theoretical training in railway operations and safety to prepare them to work as onboard staff. Accommodation was provided in passenger cars, with trainee catering staff using railway kitchen equipment.

Port of Odessa throughput climbs 1.4 percent to 16.9 million tons

Cargo traffic at Odessa Commercial Sea Port (OCSP) in January-August of this year totaled 16.9 million tons, up 1.4% over the same period last year, the state-owned company said adding the increase was driven by a 11.2 percent gain in dry cargo volume.
Eight-month volume of export containers rose 24%, import containers – by about 35.4%. Port of Odessa reports a 71.9 percent surge in handling of ore cargo. Shipments of raw sugar increased by 25%, of citrus and bananas - by 36.9%.

Turkish Airlines starts new line to Odessa

Turkey’s national air carrier Turkish Airlines will increase its number of flights to the Ukrainian cities of Odessa, Kiev and Donetsk, the company announced Thursday.
“As of Sept. 9, [Turkish Airlines] will fly four times a week to Donetsk,” the statement read. The airline currently flies to Donetsk twice a week. As of Sept. 12, the airline will fly 12 times a week to Kiev and 11 times a week to Odessa.
Turkish Airlines will start flights six times a week to Washington, D.C., as of Aug. 29 and five times per week to Los Angeles, as of Aug. 30. The company currently flies.. [+]

Odessa faces problems in servicing debt, IFX says

The Ukrainian city of Odessa faces difficulties in servicing its $40 million Swiss-franc denominated debt to BNP Paribas, Interfax-Ukraine news agency reported, citing Mayor Oleksiy Kostusev.
Kostusev said today at the city’s administration meeting that he asked the Finance Ministry to help but so far has not received any assistance, according to Interfax.
Odessa received the BNP Pariba loan, which pays an annual interest rate of 8.5 percent and matures on Dec. 30 next year, in 2007, Interfax said. The city pays a coupon every quarter, according to the news.. [+]

According to OdessaMama.org.ua and its Chief editor, V. Zabranskij, local police is protecting the illegal slot machine hall in Odessa, the summer capital of Ukraine. We thought we should mention this story to demonstrate the reality of gambling ban enforcement in Ukraine.
Last week the journalist noticed illegal slot machine hall in one of the busy underground pedestrian tunnels in Odessa and called the police. Any form of gambling except for poker tournaments and lotteries is banned in Ukraine since July 2009. Police officers arrived, took his testimony and the journalist left.. [+]

First Ukrainian grain shipped to Odessa port

The first batch of Ukrainian grain from the new harvest was shipped to Saudi Arabia from Odessa port, according to the Eastern European government’s website.
A panamax ship, the biggest ship to navigate the Panama Canal’s locks, took 52,000 metric tons of barley, according to the statement published today.
About 200,000 tons of grain is expected to be exported this month from Ukrelevatorprom, a grain storage elevator in Odessa port, according to the statement.

Odessa Film Festival will start on July 15, 2011. In its second year, the festival will host Hollywood actor John Malkovich to attract more attention. Exercise Sea Breeze 2011 successfully finished after a closing ceremony and combined press conference at the Ukrainian Officer's Club in Odessa, June 18.

Odessa port expects a 2.3% gain for H1 2011, at 13,3 million tons

Cargo throughput of SE Odessa Commercial Sea Port (OCSP) in the first half of 2011 is projected to be 13,3 million tons, up 2.3% compared with H1, 2010’s numbers, the state-run company said.
Six-month net income of OCSP is expected to reach UAH 205 million (+13.9%). The volume of payments to the country’s budget will be about UAH 220 million.

QSC sound system in Arcadia Plaza Hotel

Opera Café has opened in the Arcadia Plaza hotel in Odessa, Ukraine, complete with a QSC sound system.
