The famous Frenchman Gérard Depardieu will open today the first Odessa International Film Festival. However, the guest of honor ceremony does not intend to play only the role of "wedding general": a new film with his participation entitled "Mammoth" will open the main competition program.
The actor, which has played in more than 150 films, can be interested in French-Ukrainian film projects. Not long ago, he already had an offer according to which he was supposed to play in the co-production of "Taras Bulba". The actor was willing to perform the main role but then still refused the proposal. "It was too voluminous material and I could hardly cope with it" - said Gerard to a correspondent of ITAR-TASS during his last visit.
In the main competition there are 16 films from Ukraine, Russia, Italy, Germany, France, Spain, Japan, Australia, USA, Canada and other countries. Judge them will an international jury chaired by Dutch director Jos Sitellinga.
The Grand Prize winner will receive 15,000 US dollars and a statuette of "Golden Duke". Particular pride of the organizers is a rich non-competitive program which included the retrospective of Federico Fellini, Kira Muratova and best films produced in the Odessa Film Studio.
